Well not officially!

You would think the year is too young to be churning out hits as the masses are busy recovering from the festive overspend but that has certainly not deterred superstars Davido (Nigeria) and 'Mr. Fill Up', Cassper Nyovest (South Africa) to feel the need to start out the year with a big bang. I guess there is never a bad time for a great song, especially one from these two great crooners.

Judging from the small video posted on Instagram, the two appeared in the early hours of the morning in a Nigeria studio on January 14. The song, played briefly under a conversation full of laughter between participants during the recording , already has received thumbs up and sounds just like the kind of track these two big artists at the pinnacle of their careers are capable of making. We wouldn't expect anything less, right?

Davido effortlessly seems to brush off heavy competition not only from his fellow countrymen and also in the region, seems far from relinquishing his hold on the African music scene while his new partner in the 'scotcher', Nyovest, is surely running out of venues to fill up and once again break new ground with his music and fanbase.

Take a listen to the preview of the song here.

There is no released date on the collabo as yet but it is surely making the two artists' Instagram platforms very busy and could be the next best African song in a few weeks from now, across all chats and to a music platform near you.

THE NAIJA SOUND TAKE OVER

While we are here we might as well just talk about the Nigerian sound and how it has taken over the continent. Every artist seems compelled to sample the sound or work with an artist from the west african country to gain a little more traction.

I guess its no secret that with a population of over 150 million, three times larger than South Africa it pays off to be friends with artists such as Davido, Wiz Kid, Tekno, etc and can open up a whole new kind of fan base and a whole lot of 'ching ching'!

Their sound and profitability is drawing not only other african artists but also artists from across the seas as we have seen artists such as Rick Ross and Drake producing stellar performances with different artists.

The sound has become what best describes the continent, at the moment and will be so for a long time to come. Just a listen to any african radio or TV station today and you will quickly see the shift and dominance of the music and artists from Nigeria; more now than there has ever been in the entire history of the continent.

It is what I call music colonialism. We know more of Nigeria today than we do of any other country in the continent mostly because of the music. It has unified us all and captivated the continent.

I believe it is their belief on a certain sound that has paid off for them, the same way house music has lifted South Africa to mingle with the Puff Diddy's and Alicia Keys of this world. In the end its all about the 'cheddar' and if its that's how the paper is made, I would say play on brothers!

If its about making a lot of cash, Cassper and Davido seem to have mastered the art thereof with sell out concerts and amazing business deals that were not heard off in the African music landscape before. The two have managed to wet the appetites of african music lovers and still manage to create a 'happy sound' that is irresistible to the ear.

It's a long year ahead but it surely gets through fast with great music, welcome to 2018.
